Overview

Brownsville is Texas's southernmost city and is located across the Rio Grande from the Mexican town of Matamoros and within minutes of South Padre Island and the Gulf of Mexico. Thousands of acres of fertile, farmland and untamed wilderness surround the town. Lands that are as rich with incredible biodiversity as they are with historical significance

Of particular local interest is the fact that the last battle of the Civil War took place just east of Brownsville on May 13, 1865, with rebel Col. Rilp Ford besting the union forces in that last fight. Brownsville thus claims the first battle of the War with Mexico and the last battle of the Civil War

Amenities in Brownsville include a range of museums visitor' center parks, and a Wildlife Sanctuary Naturalists, enjoy rare species of birds that can be observed in areas such as the Resaca de la Palma State Park and the Sabla Palm SSanctuary The Tower Rio Grande is also home to ¨Winter Texans¨ from late fall to early spring.
